  sometimes, and this is a rare sometimes, boiling in plain water (maybe with vinegar) will remove the excess flux, but it isn't going to rid your piece of the discoloration from heating... also ultrasonic with a really good ultrasonic liquid might have some effect as well, but nothing that i know of will do quite the job that pickle does. :-(

  Sometimes i try to hit the water real/not too soon and the flux almost explodes off the piece,Still i notice some discolor,but often no flux.
