Re: resources in the east bay?
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 3:25 PMwww.ottofrei.com, they are in Oakland. Not quite the selection that Rio has, but there may still be warehouse pick-up.

Re: resources in the east bay?
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 5:51 PMI've shopped both Rio Grande and Otto Frei. I tend to spend more at Rio Grande.
The problem I had with Otto Frei's supply of Sterling Silver wire was that they couldn't tell me what temper it was - I'd wanted half-hard or full-hard, and they couldn't cite the spec for the product. Based on the results, I'd say that what I bought was Dead Soft (which isn't a good thing for what I was doing).
Advantage is you can get it NOW instead of having to wait for days; they also have an interesting collection of used things available.
Troubles with Rio Grande involve typing orders into their web-based order form. I've found it is much better to call them on their 800 line and talk with a live human.
Also, there's George's in Hayward. I've bought a variety of things from him in the past 10 years or so. A little pricey, but he's got a lot of stuff.
Shop facilities for club members: MGSCV.org, behind the Hayward Airport. Great club, mostly retired, access to a wide variety of skills and the people enjoy sharing their knowledge. I joined to get access to the casting room, and they told me I had to cut and polish a cabochon first. Once I did, I eventually started cutting and polishing opals, and became entranced with them. -

Re: resources in the east bay?
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 5:19 PMrio isn't exaclty loaded with bargains, i recently needed .02" TiG electrodes and a local supplier beat rio by around 50% and there was no shipping......lot's of things(tools equipment, non-speciality supplies) for the jewelry industry can be purchases @ better prices though industrial supply companies like McMaster -Carr and MSC and local welding suppliers will have gloves, masks etc. Also harbor freight is good for that if you are just shopping price, not durability. -

Wed, December 12, 2007 - 5:26 PMThe ting I love about Harbor Freight(other than disposable air tools) is every once in a while the sell something REALLY weird, something that even THEY have no idea what it is. and it's always cheap... -

Re: resources in the east bay?
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 10:15 PMClassic example, provided to me by a man that I taught basic chain mail to:
The accessories for my Jump Ringer tool included a set of 16 mandrels of various sizes - $43
He got me a set of transfer punches that was way more than 16 different SAE sizes, for $11.
Not the same tool, but better and cheaper if I use them as mandrels.
It definately pays to shop if you have the time. -
