Armoring for The SCA got me started doing chain-mail and then I started making small chain mail half gloves and "wedding gloves" then on to braclets and rings. About five years ago I got into some jewelry courses at the local college and I started silver working.

My dad is a jewler. He said he knew someone who was and learned from him now it's his job. I suggest you take a class

I started in Jr College by taking a class in jewelry making and small scale metal smithing. Tim McCreight has a great book for beginners. But Opi's books are really very comprehensive and amazing (next on my list of books to buy!) But wearable items can be made from a multitude of materials, not just metal. There are as many different attitudes and approaches, as there are materials. I love looking at Metalsmith Magazine, it's chock full of artists' work and beautiful pictures.
