Okay, i am reading what i can in my jewelry concepts & technology book...
how in the world is this made? with what tools do you pierce, bend and engrave this?
(So far I have a kawasaki dremmel type tool with some attachmnents...and am wondering if i can figure out how to use it with jewelry. Oh, and i am thinking of grabbing some copper sheet to try out designs and bend them to fit around people arms..but we are in the throws of moving and so it my eta is a couple of weeks.)
So would one take a flat sheet of silver and then mount a drawing onto it (or transfer it?)...
then pierce it...(with what i am still figuring out)
then cut or saw or file out the in betweens (negative spaces)...
then bends it to different dimensions?
full of a lot of questions all the time ;)

Re: Dragon of 4 Elements: pierced, bent, and engraved sterling silver?
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 12:45 AMIf I were making this I would definitely start by making a form. I use two short pieces of stout steel pipe welded side-by-side that are the same diameters as my radius and ulna, and the right distance apart to simulate my wrist. I would then cut the outline of the piece out of sheet (start with copper to get the process down before using (expensive) silver. You can pierce, chisel and engrave with steel tools. They can be had on the internet but most metalsmiths end up making their own if they can. I draw my images with a superfine tipped magic marker. It's permanent ink but comes off pretty easily with acetone. Once you have pierced the holes either by drilling or by punching then you can use a jewelers saw to cut the pattern. After the cutting is done you can begin to wrap it around the form. A wooden hammer may help and not leave dents or marks...
You really need to take a basic course first Julia. It'll save you allot of time and answer all these questions.
And this is an "advanced "piece after many years of practice. I don not mean to discourage you in any way,in fact there are very creative aspects to just blundering through with no knowledge or experience whatsoever, but again I recommend starting with copper for a good long time ,until the use of the tools is familiar ... -

Re: Dragon of 4 Elements: pierced, bent, and engraved sterling silver?
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 9:54 AMI would cast that bracelet. It seems like a huge amount of work to fabricate and wouldn't be too difficult to create in wax.
A good challenge, but I'm not sure its worth trying to fabricate that. -

Fri, June 6, 2008 - 9:59 AMSome people are more interested in Process than in the finished item.
