Are the themes of my jewellery work. I just launched my own jewellery store online, www.etherealcreation.etsy.com and I'd love for you to stop by, say hello and let me know how I am doing. Jewellery has always been a passion of mine but it has grown into a full obsession *l* I really have to pace myself with creating and listing items in my store.

It's great to join the group!

Hello all!
I've dabbled in jewelry making but it has been a few years (I have a 3 year old now who prevents me from creating now). I've just done a little wire wrapping and my technique could use some work, and I would love to learn more.
I am in the SF East Bay, and was wondering if there might be someone who could use a little help (with ? is up to you) in return for teaching me some new skills?!
I would only be available evenings and weekends for now, but I can't think of a better way to spend some of my free time than learning something new.
Let me know if you are interested, and we can work out the deets!

LA artists who can do engagement / wedding rings?

I want to get custom made rings in gold or platinum, including a gemstone engagement ring and wedding bands. I particularly like the style of James Meyer. Howeer, I'd prefer supporting a local artist, if anyone has the skills and does this kind of thing.

If you do this, or know some one who does, let me know.
Gold or Silver detailing, casting in LA area?

I have some small ceramic figures I'd like to try having having re-created in gold or silver from castings. The material I use is fired at 2500 deg, so it's an unusually dense ceramic.

Does anyone here have a lead on a place/person who can produce a small run?

Would it be possible to plate or coat them in gold?

I was paging through this month's Lucky magazine and spotted a fantastic bracelet from Burberry. I figured I could easily recreate something similar but i'm having trouble locating a spike similar to what they used. Does anyone have any ideas as to where to find metal spikes or how to make them?

Torches for metal-smithing?

I'm wondering what kind of torch you use, and how you like it?

I'm hoping to set up a torch in my small home-studio, and would prefer the type that connects to a larger vs. smaller fuel source. I'll be working mostly with silver.

What other tools are "must haves" in your book?

Any input and / or suggestions are very much appreciated!

1:1 training in silversmithing and beyond!

This is a unique opportunity to learn basic techniques of metalsmithing affordably and with full attention from a teacher. It’s also a great way to get inspired! The best way to learn anything is hands-on training in a 1:1 teacher:student environment. My goal is to help you get excited about the possibilities of using the materials and tools in order to realize your creative visions in metal. Are you dreaming of wearable art but don’t know how to start making it? Do you have larger sculptural goals? Something in between? I want to help my students plan out the path of learning that works best for them. Whether you just want to tinker and get the hang of metalworking to make a few projects, or if you want to eventually put together your own studio someday, I can offer my experience and advice, along with an opportunity to try things out and see what works for you.

Classes focus on jewelry and sculpture techniques using non-ferrous metals (silver, copper, bronze, brass). Piercing, Raising and forming, soldering, cold connections, mold making (although casting will be done elsewhere) and more.

Options for welding instruction can be discussed for the future, but are not available in my space at this time.

Each class is 3hrs long, and takes place at my home studio in East Oakland. The cost is $90, and after the first lesson or so there will be added materials cost, which will vary depending on what your goals and projects are.

Lesson times are flexible.

This is a very special opportunity that is hard to come by. It is difficult to get the attention you need in large classes, and the expense tends not to feel gratifying. This way you will your money’s worth and more.

Dragon of 4 Elements: pierced, bent, and engraved sterling silver?

Posted a picture in the pics section.
Okay, i am reading what i can in my jewelry concepts & technology book...
how in the world is this made? with what tools do you pierce, bend and engrave this?
(So far I have a kawasaki dremmel type tool with some attachmnents...and am wondering if i can figure out how to use it with jewelry. Oh, and i am thinking of grabbing some copper sheet to try out designs and bend them to fit around people arms..but we are in the throws of moving and so it my eta is a couple of weeks.)

So would one take a flat sheet of silver and then mount a drawing onto it (or transfer it?)...
then pierce it...(with what i am still figuring out)
then cut or saw or file out the in betweens (negative spaces)...
then bends it to different dimensions?

full of a lot of questions all the time ;)

fabricating and forging

Hi!

So in about 1 month, my husband and I will be moving into a new home and I will FinallY have the space for my own art studio. I have been wire wrapping and beading for a while now and want to begin learning fabricating and forging. I stay home with my daughter while my husband works and it looks like it will be quite some time before I can find classes that are compatible with his/our schedule. I learn quite rapidly though, and intend to teach myself as much as possible. I just got a copy of Oppi Untracht's Jewelry Concepts and Technology, Tim McCrieght's Complete Metalsmith (Pro edition) and some others - including one on Metal Clay (though I do not have a kiln yet). I plan to get a subscription to jewelry artist when we move.

My question is: Can you all give me advice on where to start? I understand the ideas behind piercing sheet metal and then drilling it and filing it, and think I will learn to solder pretty fast. But what sort of things should I learn first and what tools should I invest in? Should I pick things I am interested in making and then just focus on learning the techniques involved in making them? For instance, I am very interested in making pendants of different metals (like lockets and things that open up) - so should I focus on designing ones that I like and then worry abou† what's involved in the processes?

I am very excited to have recognized what really is calling out to me for my life's work...now I just need to go and tackle the aspects of how to make a business of it all. I have always been an artist and draw and paint constantly - and have been making gifts for people to wear for years and years....I am truly so very excited to get started and am blessed to have found a tribe of people who are all so talented - Any advice will certainly be appreciated.
human forms for making jewelry?

I am at the beginning of starting to try and make jewelry my career. I love it! And I am often inspired by the work I see here. Right now I simply work wire, but would love to progress to casting and maybe even learning CAD to make molds one day!

This is probably an odd question - When I have made necklaces, i have always just used a bead board to set them up. or wrapped wire and not really worried about it. When making necklaces, do you all use any sort of form (like a bust or something) to make sure it fits right? Is it necessary?

With the wire I can just sort of hand mold it, so it seems to be okay...but I would like to figure out casting at some point, and wondered how do you guys make your necklaces?

Wondering if anyone can direct me to a source that carries natural lapis cabs. Been looking around online, and can't seem to find any good sites. I need about a 40x30 mm (smaller is fine too) oval, and want to find somewhere inexpensive. It is for a custom wire wrap. Thanks!

I am going to get my new dremel flex shaft set up. Finish the burning man necklace/choker I started before I got sick and in the hospital....prob make my own website and close my ebay store. as eBays policy changes last year were real business killers to me

I have lots of new ideas to get out there--most (not all) have made the journey from my mind to paper (the first step for me)...now to get them from paper to design :-)

More metal and chain....got the metal bug....and just flashed a new necklace design..so off to the design book.....

Does anyone have a pattern of how to create expandable or accordian-like pieces of jewellry?

Here is a link for a ring that can be stretched into a bracelet.

I'd like to create something similer using beads/crystals (to be worn on a penis) ;) ...Any ideas on how to design this would be most welcomed.

Thank you,

Join The 90 Features in 90 Days Challenge on Etsy!

Hi Jewelry Artists!

I would like to tell you about a new reciprocative blogging promotion I developed called the 90 Features in 90 Days Challenge. We currently have 56 artists now participating and need approximately 35 more to complete our goal so that all artists get featured in 90 blogs throughout the holiday season. This reciprocative blogging project began to show results after about the 40th day, and although the biggest most sustained results have been for artists making sewn or crocheted items, we do have several jewelry artists who are seeing great success from it. One woman just made 7 sales in one day with her pea pod wire-wrapped jewelry, from brand new Etsy buyers! Another jewelry artist is now making sales daily for the first time.

for exact instructions on how to participate, please go to this Etsy forum thread; http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5276160&page=1

If you have a blog and a web presence anywhere you can do this. If you do not have an Etsy store you can always sign up for a buye account so that you can post in the forums.

Those of you who are already on Etsy probably know that Etsy is a "tough nut to crack" especially in the jewelry category, but we are starting to do it through this challenge! We are just getting to the best part, so I hope to see many of you soon.

Wishing everyone much prosperity this season!

Sincerely,

Pippit

Silversmith wanted for Charity Project

Hey there,
I'm going to be working on an international charity project that will involve an artisan/artisans
creating small specific items out of reclaimed or fair-trade silver...
I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada,
so an artisan near my location would be great...
But I'd love to communicate with any silvercraftspersons to get an idea about the cost and work involved regarding the creation of
small jewellery pieces made out of reclaimed/fair-trade silver!
I hope someone out there can help me out, because I think that this project could really create awareness and raise funds for some truly needy people....

Hello,
I'm in the brainstorming stages of creating a unique line of chakra jewelry, with an emphasis on using tumbled crystals/beads to balance the root chakra ;) . I'd like to know what patterns/styles of beading could be worn comfortably on/close to the genitals, what materials would be best to use, etc. I'd like to create something that is functional and asthetically pleasing for both men and women. Feel free to pm me any and all suggestions.

Infinite thanks and blessings!
Petra :)

Who all on this board has their stuff in boutiques, department stores, does booths at tradeshows? What other ways do you sell your goods (home parties, Internet sales?) What have you found to be the most effective?

I have been following the topic about drilling shells and I have questions. (I don't have formal jewelry training yet, just getting started.)
Can someone point me to information about drilling under water? Is it limited to hand drills, do you need special equipment, how not to get electrocuted?

Thank you

Feedback on workshop concept

Hello all! I came back from the Clasp conference so inspired by the people I met and the conversations that I had. I am planning on driving around the country this winter to establish store accounts, explore gem mines, caves, hot springs and.....research industrial processes that have application to the jewelry industry and meet with/interview jewelers in their studios working with video and writing. I am pitching the concept to magazines and trade groups. I realized that there is alot of new technology out there that I have no clue about since I was trained very traditionally 20 years ago so I am going to self educate by seeing the processes in action as I don't understand as well by just reading about htem. I have talked to alot of people since and there seems to be a market for the edited information at the end of my journey aws a video or presentation at some trade conferences. I am talking processes like the powder enameling of the big trucks at the Peterbilt factory, waterjet cutting in the aerospace industry, powder metal depositing at the San Di National Labs.....if anyone has ideas of places for me to go or people for me to interview please pm me.
The other idea that has taken root was catalyzed by a participant at the conference who has asked me to come up to Ontario to teach a workshop so we are putting together this format. I would love feedback about the concept from everyone...and now ladies and gents my new incarnation as a workshop leader....drum role....

Creating your own Talismanic Workshop
Workshop concept:

In ancient times amulets and talismans were made and worn for specific purposes. They were imbued with the intention and focus of the maker. Whether it was to bless them with the energy of the animal they were hunting, heal an illness, or to protect from harmful intent each piece had a purpose aside from adornment. Their power came from a connection with natural forces and religious associations.
The belief that a person, if he/she knows how, can start some mysterious forces rolling that can direct and control will or health is very ancient. These forces are activated by spoken words, performance of ceremonies, and the use of objects charged with magical properties. They are not used with negative intent and only with blessings.
In this workshop we will learn tools to use in our creation process so that the finished pieces will take on a meaning and purpose that will enhance a good design and raise it from the mere ornamental stage to a place that evokes memory, reaction, bonding, and a sense of power to the wearer as well as others who view it.
In this context each workshop participant will be able to create a personal talisman designed to be wearable in our modern society. We will use found objects collected out in nature along with the pieces you bring with you that might already have an energetic connection or representation for you. Be it crystal, stone, bone, feather, wood...through circle ceremony and meditation each person will be led to find their inner vision and assisted in manifesting it into a wearable piece of powerful jewelry.
Any jewelry skill level is welcome. Please bring with you any hand tools that you use and wire, plate metal, beads, objects, sketch books that you might want to incorporate into your process.

Beth McElhiney has been a jeweler for over 25 years and is now from Martha's Vineyard. She is an award winning designer and accomplished silversmith. By tapping into her training in earth based religions and energy healing her jewelry transcends the ordinary and becomes an intimate object for her clients. She has been commissioned to do necklaces which hold healing for illnesses, memory boxes of those who have passed away, and "life" bracelets that are filled with symbols to represent the phases of the client’s life journey. Her fascination with ancient symbols and patterns has led to her current collection of pieces which feel ancient but are fashion forward and easily wearable in today's world.

Hello there all!
As a belly dancer myself, I have posted some tribal-esque jewelry to my page, along with hand crafted art my mother and I create. =D
A lot of it are things I've purchased and just don't wear due to having so much.
Do its all pre-owned but never worn!
So it all needs new homes that can show it the love that I cannot... =)
The tribal type jewelry I have up so far would be a great addition to any tribal/ATS costume!
So get them while they're up!
This isn't the only site I have them posted to, so once their gone, their gone!
As for now, thank you for reading and I hope you have fun looking around my gallery! =D

After having finished a ring using black mica, and starting on one combining jet and rough diamonds, I started wondering about the use of different types of stones in jewelry, materials that have fallen into disuse (like jet) or never given a serious thought (like mica). I'm talking about stones that are transformed from their natural form by some process (cutting, polishing, ...), but that for some reason have been decided to not be suitable for use in jewelry.

What weird mineralogical finds should be awakened from their Snow White dreams, and dragged into contemporary jewelry?

I've been finding that much of the work I see tends to be either very classical (where size of stone and weight of gold are the important elements), or else organic, smooth, a bit new-agey, but not going out on a branch in terms of design.materials.wearability. There's a third
direction, experimental, but in an accomplished sense, a bit along the work shown (for example) here:

http://www.galerie-annickzufferey.com/collection.html
http://www.deuxpoissons.com/artists.html

I'd be curious about the thoughts of the tribe about that edgier kind of work, and why there seems to be rather little of it out there. From my own experience, those galleries tend to go out of business rather quickly, presumably due to poor sales. So it's perhaps a lack of quantity generating a lack of visibility generating a lack of public awareness generating a lack of sales. Or does that kind of work not appeal to you (and by extension, to the general public)?

Hi.. I'm new...and have a question!

Hi there!

I'm new to this tribe! I joined beacuse I am looking for a little advice from the professional crowd about the jewelry business.

I graduated from college about a year and a half ago with a degree in science. But art has always been a passion of mine, I have been making jewelry since I was a young kid, I used to sell my crafty things at street markets and such. After I graduated from school I went to work for a biotech co, after working for a year in the science industry I realized science was not something I want to do for a living.... I have been trying to fill my "creative void" with art classes and such. Now that I have been searching for a career path I am thinking about jewelry making... I have always wanted to get into metal smithing and have also delved abit in lampwork. But I don't know where to begin.. or even if this is possible without all the schooling.

Any advice is helpful? What are your thoughts on formal jewelry schools?

Thanks! and sorry for the long explanations...

Some of the designs I have in my mind require soldering with stones (or pearls) in place - I've tried it with pearls, and that doesn't work very well, unless the soldering is done very, very quickly (otherwise, BANG and a smell of burnt hair). But what about other stones? Does anybody have experience with this? Zirconia are supposedly safe. What about raw diamonds? Quartz-family gems? Apatites? Does heat paste help in any way (in my attempts with pearls, it dried out far before the solder flowed).

Photography ideas?

Hi all,

I do a variety of different types of jewelry using vintage beads, semi-precious stones, wire-work, PMC, etc. I am not only cheap - I also work for a non-profit so I have little disposable income. =:0) But I do sell my jewelry at shows & fairs & exhibitions. I need some advice on how best to photograph it, without a pro photog, so I can post it online. I'd like to do a simple website and I have help for that part of the process - web design. Now I need help/advice about the photography bit. I do have a digital camera but I need ideas on what to use for lighting and how best to frame the shots so the details in the work are clear. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Suggesstions on Selling

I am some what new to selling my things, I have vendored at a few events, and did okay, (Made back my booth fee plus!)
but I would like to get more out of my joy of making jewelry.
I have a few questions and if any of you have any suggestions please chime in and let me know how it has helped you.

Selling to local Retailers?
Do you place your things on Consignment or sell out right at a Wholesale pricing?
How do you get into Gift Trade Shows? and what are the costs to get into a Trade show?
Then once at the Trade Show....1) Do you sell out right to the Buyers or Do you take Orders of your Product?
And if you sell out right to Buyers, How large is your inventory of Jewelry?

I know So many questions, But I have been doing a lot of thinking about this and need to get something going.
I have a large amount of money invested in my jewelry and supplies and also Display pieces, so I would like to start landing some accounts.
Any suggestions would be great.
Oh, yeah....can any one also pass on info on how to find Arts and Craft Fairs, Street Fairs, Musical Festivals.
I know there is a few different websites that I have found, some cost money to get the info though. Any other suggestions to free websites
Or even the ones which charges a small fee I am willing to join if this is the best way to get into show.

New Downloadable Jewelry Tutorial

(Admin! I'f I'm breaking any no-sales rule, just delete the post! I looked on all discussion topics looking for that rule, but didn't find it!)

After a lot of requests in the past months, I’ve finally decided to start making downloadable wire jewelry tutorials! It is my goal to publish jewelry tutorials that are easy, show you new skills you can use in many different projects and last but not least, that I have sold continuously through NeoVamp.

There are many wonderful tutorials for wire wrapping on Internet but I felt there was a lack of tutorials for beginners. The truth about wire working is that if you learn the basics well, then you will know how a complex piece was made just by seeing a picture of it! While I highly encourage you to make the more complex and artful pieces you can make, the truth is that sometimes the amount of time needed to make one piece raises the price so much that it becomes hard to sell.

Also, I thought it was very important to show designs that I have found that sell and stand by themselves, not needing trends and ending up being the jewel that is bought today and forgotten tomorrow. It is very important for me to make designs that my customers can wear for many years, always looking elegant and fashionable.

You can find the first tutorial available and all the explanations about how downloadable tutorials work here:
neovampjewelry.wordpress.com/wire-jewelry-tutorials/

I usually do a wire a wrap around polished stones to make pendants but I've got a few that I'm considering drilling holes in, instead. What do I need to know about doing this before attempting it? These are all flat, oval, polished stones. A sodalite and I think the other 2 are red jasper and ???? (it's a buttery yellow color). The sodalite is the softest of the 3. Is there a way to avoid cracking the stones?

Hello, My name is Michele and I am a beadaholic.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE to make jewelry. I've been making a living at it on and off for 12 years. I've been at jewelry work steady for almost 3 years, while helping my parter Mark through engineering school(When he's done, I'll have sugar daddy). I work at a wonderful bead store called All About Beads and sell my jewelry to a few "wholesale accounts" in my area as well as at craft fairs, I hope to get myself together enough to hit galleries soon.
I recently started learning lampwork and silver smithing. I LOVE silver, the way it moves and feels. I can't wait until I can use my own glass and silver beads and clasps in my work. It'll make my jewelry really feel like mine!
Blessed be

Cubic Zirconia and Lab Created Gems - article

Cubic Zirconia and Lab Created Gems

by Ahna
http://Ahna.Etsy.com
(both for sale in my shop)
http://ArtCreated.com

Cubic Zirconia has a long history, dating back to the early 1900's but it wasn't until the 1970's, that Soviet scientists learned how to grow the crystals in the laboratory. In the 1980's Swarovski & Co. (a world renowned Australian producer of leaded crystal) began producing cubic zirconia. In recent years it has grown in popularity not just because of a lower price than diamonds but because it is now equal in sparkle and clarity as a diamond.

The hardness of Cubic Zirconia is 8.5 on the Moh's scale has a beautiful shine and is loupe clean. Cubic Zirconia is a cubic form of zirconium oxide. The overall effect is so similar to a diamond that it can even fool a trained gemologist on occasion, it can match or surpass the beauty and brilliance of many diamonds and now comes in a rainbow of colors.

Cubic zirconia can be cleaned with any conventional jewelry cleaner or detergent. With such a high hardness and durability, you can use a brush to clean off dirt or oil also. Ultra sonic jewelry cleaners may also be used on CZ and will not damage the stone.

Lab Created Gems - Synthetic Gemstones

Lab created gems or synthetic gemstones are gems that have a natural chemical structure. Lab created rubies and sapphires are made from corundum. The flux method is used. Lab created gems are loupe clean and very well cut.

Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art Clay artists use cubic zirconia and lab created gems because they can withstand the heat from a kiln.

Buying silver in Thailand?

I am going to Thailand (several areas from the North to the Islands & BKK) and would love to know if you have ever bought silver beads there. If so, specifically where? Are they easy to find? Do I need to worry about anything like documentation - like applying for a business-related Visa (as a tourist I will go for under 30 days so I do not need a visa otherwise) ? I would certainly buy more than the average shopper, but not like a major importer...Don't know if customs will be an issue...Any advice would be great. If I do bring stuff back, can I write off my trip? And to do that, what documentation would I need to do so legitimately, if I were to get audited? Thanks!

Need black back in finished Indian jewelry

I've recently aquired a number of vintage Navajo and Zuni squash blossoms, rings and bracelets. It looks like someone polished the pieces with some sort of abrasive silver polish and removed some of the black patina in these beatiful pieces. Does anyone have any recommendation on how to put back the black without harming the turquoise, coral, or mother of pearl stones? I just purchased a bottle of Black Max and liver of sulfur solution but have never used either one. Is one safer than the other for this type of jewelry? And how to I use? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi all!

Just bought myself a little bottle of liver of sulphur (liquid) but I have no clue how to use it! There's nothin' on the bottle and nothing on the maid o' metal website. I've heard you need to heat it - how? Also heard you need to heat your piece - micro torch okay, or is that too much heat? Diluted or straight up? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,

I'm new here, and I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Declan Halpin, I live just south of Boston and I'm a CAD/CAM consultant for jewelers. Basically, I help jewelers get ideas from paper to physical model using CAD and Rapid Prototyping. If anyone's interested in discussing this technology or is looking for help transitioning into this methodology feel free to get in touch.

Best,

In response to questions I had about the person primarily responsible for me pursuing a career in
Jewelry, I wrote this reply to Lautari......Thought others might be interested.
My main reason for this is to show how generous he was with his knowledge....He told me about how in his early days
working at the bench in Providence, RI, when two jewelers from different companies happened to go to the same
restuarant for lunch, that one of them would leave. Knowledge was not shared among rival jewelers, and there were few books to get information from. Fortunately that has changed to a large degree.
I've always felt that skill and design ability are what set us apart, not our technical knowledge, because now that is pretty easily attainable.

My primary teacher's name was Carlyle H. Smith. He was a really wonderful man, very generous with his time and knowledge, and was responsible for the direction I have taken with my life. I first met him when I was a poor, struggling college student at New Mexico
State University. He came there in my first semester as a visiting professor and taught a special semester class in jewelry. I couldn't afford to take the class, so I showed up the first day and asked if I could come and watch ocassionally. He took me outside and asked what my interest in jewelry was, and I told him I was thinking about a career, but that I couldn't afford the class. He said that I was probably the only one there with a career interest, so I could attend the class without paying, and at the end, he would give me a truthful evaluation and critique as to whether he thought I could succeed, if I had further training and education. That started a 35 year apprenticeship, relationship, and friendship!
He has helped a number of his students over the years the same way, and has been a major influence in American Contemporary Jewelry. He has many students all over the country who are in many of the well known jewelry books, and they have well known students as well.
I attended his school as a graduate student, taught there as an instructor, and later taught at Northern Arizona University and was the director of a Jewelry Trade School in Austin, Texas. Carlyle retired when I got my M.F.A. at his school, The University of Kansas, and later did workshops for me and my students at both of my schools. I also started three different Art & Jewelry Gallery businesses over this period of time, and he was always available with help and advice from his experience in business before he became a teacher.

He died last year at 93, still sharp, and in our phone conversations 2-3 times a month, he always had a new joke for me that I had never heard! As I said in my post, he was still making beautiful, creative jewelry until he was 90, and decided to quit because it was too painful to sit very long. We talked the last time about 2 weeks before he died, and as usual he had a new joke for me. He caught pnuemonia a few days later, and was not able to recover. I will, and do miss him a lot, and I have tried for years to follow his lead, and be as generous with the knowledge he passed on to me, and with what I have learned as well.
I have a group of my students, his second generation students, that I stay in touch with as well. We learn a lot from each other, and it's like having extended family.
One time Carlyle introduced me to one of his well known jewelry friends, Olaf Skoofors, and I told Olaf that I had learned everything I know from Carlyle, and Olaf said"He may have taught you everything you know, but not everything he knows, but if you know the right questions to ask, you'll learn a lot more, but you'll never learn everything". How right he was!!
One of the most valuable things Carlyle ever said to me however, was not about jewelry technique or skills, but about my attitude.....he said that jewelry was for fun and enjoyment.
We wear it for the enjoyment and so it should be fun making it. Whatever you do, if you don't have fun doing it, then don't it. Life is too short to do something for a career that you don't enjoy. I have tried to live by that, and pass it on!!

Designing vs. Producing - HELP!

I have a very important problem that is dastardly depressing… I would greatly appreciate any advice.

I completed a whitesmithing apprenticeship in Florence, Italy... I learned the works: casting, carving, reposse, embossing, etching, stone setting and metalsmithing the old fashioned way. Not only did I have to pull my own wire, but I had to melt my metal, pour it in a block, cut it, and shape it... then pull it. And then maybe make it into a prong setting for a faceted stone. So we are talking OLD SCHOOL.

And now, here I am in the USA again, looking at Fire Mountain Gems and Rio Grande catalogs and ACK! A pendant like what I just took a week to carve and cast is being sold for $20. I don't mean the exact design... I just mean that when I am making a design and trying to sell jewelry, I make producing nothing in comparison. Price wise and quantity wise. A few pieces with a silicone or rubber mold is all I can afford. *sigh*

So the question is... am I better off as a designer? Should I make my designs, patent them, and sell them to a company instead of trying to putter around with a private business? I now work in the Diamond District of NYC so I know what it is to outsource and construct with already bought in bulk components. Buy the woven cord, buy the pendant, and put them together; half the time the clasp is attached! And then they can produce a billion in no time, charge a little, and sell sell sell. With my old world learnings, I just can't keep up emotionally. I can't understand how to outsource and start with components. Yes, it is jewelry making when you are working with loose beads and findings… I wholeheartedly believe that. But when you are buying a pre-made pendant and putting it on a pre-made chain and then calling it your own? I am seeing tons of that and it just makes me feel so moot point.

How would one go about selling designs to companies? Patenting? My specialty is cast pendant and earring designs...

Please help or maybe direct me towards someone who can.

Thank you very much,
Bezel Setting Help?

Aloha,
I was wondering if anyone out there has any tips or techniques on bezel setting. I have a commision that I'm working on and my fingers are pretty sore from holding the peice while I push the bezel. My metal teacher never really showed us how to do it so I've kind of made it up as I go along and learn from my mistakes. Any info would really be appreciated.
Mahalo,
Simone

Hey,
I just bought a Dremel and some old coins and i wanna make a necklace by drilling holes in the coins and connecting them...and now my question is, what is the best way of doing that without killing hundreds of drill bits???
In the store they said i should use drilling oil and water??!!
Thanks a lot for any kind of help :-)

Hi folks, I'm also just learning and was thinking that it would be really fun to combine an extended international trip with a chance to learn different jewelry desgining techniques in countries around the world. Does anyone have suggestions for classes abroad or techniques/styles of different cultures that would help me build my skills?
